Panto-land is well underway in Hanley as the Regent Theatre welcomes the cast of Dick Whittington.
This is Jonathan Wilkes' 20th year, yes that's right 20, and this is hands down the funniest and most brilliant show ever and why? It's simple, he is Mr Stoke on Trent, he brings charm and wit as Dick Whittington and you can tell the area is very much part of his DNA. He just gets it!
This year is also special, because if you are familiar with Stoke's finest offering, it's the return of adopted Stokie, the wonderful Christian Patterson as Sarah the Cook. Jonny, Christian and making his 9th panto at Stoke, Kai Owen as King Rat. The trio are back together after a 2 year hiatus where other work had clashed with Christian's busy acting schedule.
Completing the line up is Gina Murray who plays The Spirit of Bow Bells, Samara Casteallo who is Alice Witzwarren and finally Marlee Jay who plays the nimble Tommy the cat. Talented students from the Wilkes Academy perform as part of the ensemble.
On to the show. It's not a panto without dazzling costumes, a colourful set design and we are treated to a larger than life rodent, watch out, it's massive!!!!
We follow Dick (and his trusty cat!) as he seeks fame, fortune and happiness journeying to become Lord Mayor of Stokie Land. Standing in his way is the evil rodent King Rat. Will true love prevail? You will have to find out in this ultimate magical pantomime adventure!
If you are looking for your usual slapstick comedy, water guns and the Stokie 12 days of Christmas then this is for you.
A panto for young and old, in my opinion this is by far the funniest and entertaining panto ever.
Congratulations to Jonny Wilkes for 20 years panto service to Stoke, and as they say "if it's not broken, don't fix it" and why would you?
Here's to another 20 years Jonny!!!
