Review by Janine Hulme

Ghost the Musical, based on the beloved 1990 film, graces the stage at the Regent Theatre in Hanley, offering an emotional and enchanting evening of theatre that captivates audiences from start to finish. With its blend of romance, suspense, and supernatural elements, the musical adaptation successfully transfers the essence of the film while adding an invigorating layer of theatrical flair.

Performance and Production

The Regent Theatre curtain rises and take you on the emotional journey of the characters. The stage design is cleverly executed, featuring dynamic backdrops and innovative lighting that invoke the film's haunting atmosphere without overwhelming the performances. The use of projection technology adds an extra dimension to scenes, effectively highlighting the transition between the different realms of the living and the dead.

The leading roles are brought to life with remarkable talent. The portrayal of Sam Wheat played by Josh St. Clair, originally played by Patrick Swayze, is a standout performance. The actor captures Sam's charm and vulnerability while navigating the complexities of love and loss. His chemistry with Molly Jensen, portrayed passionately by an equally talented actress, Rebekah Lowings, is palpable and drives the emotional core of the story. Their duets, particularly "Unchained Melody," resonate deeply, leaving the audience spellbound. Jacqui Dubois who plays Oda Mae Brown certainly brings a bit of Whoopi Goldberg to her performance and was a firm favourite.

Direction and Choreography

Directed by Bob Tomson with a keen eye for pacing and emotional depth, the production balances lighter moments with the more tragic themes of grief and longing effectively. The choreography by Alastair David complements the musical numbers beautifully, infusing energy into the performance while maintaining the focus on character development and storytelling. The spirit of the musical is further enhanced by an impressive ensemble cast, whose performances add layers to the narrative.

Music and Score

The music, composed by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, elevates the production with its haunting melodies and poignant lyrics. The score is well-integrated into the story, with each song propelling the narrative forward. Numbers like "Three Little Words" and "I Had a Life" encapsulate the struggle and drive of the characters, leaving audiences reflecting on the beauty of love and the pain of separation.

Conclusion

Ghost the Musical at the Regent Theatre in Hanley is a beautifully staged production that captures the heart of the original story while providing a fresh and engaging experience. The combination of strong performances, compelling direction, and a stirring musical score makes this adaptation a must-see for both fans of the film and musical theatre enthusiasts alike.
